[2011 ASIA Future Forum] Asia Future Forum Suggests ¡®5 Action Plans¡¯

¡°Sustainable Development must be the principle for operating East Asian Community.¡± ¡®Asia Future Forum 2011¡¯ closed on the 16th after suggesting ¡®Five Action Plans for the Future¡¯ having the quote above as their core values. From the November 15th to 16th, at Lotte Hotel, Sogong-dong, Seoul, participants of Asia Future Forum agreed that East Asian society faces a three-layer crisis of the energy/environment in the wake of Fukushima accident, economic growth, and distribution like wealth polarization. They also suggested solutions for overcoming the multi-layer crisis in Five Action Plans. The Five Action Plans include ¡®sustainable development¡¯, ¡®corporate social responsibility¡¯, ¡®a mutual agreement on broadcasting for Korea, China and Japan¡¯, ¡®establishing a social economy based on social enterprises and cooperatives¡¯ and ¡®developing renewable energy industry¡¯. Lee Won-jae, the president of Hankyoreh Economic Research Institute, reported the summary of the conclusions from the forum, ¡°Asian values have the potential for helping the world overcome the crisis. However, participants agreed that if Asia stays exclusive, it may impose a threat on peace and prosperity.¡± Kwon Tae-seon, an editor at Hankyoreh Media Group, elaborated on the significance of this forum at the closing ceremony: ¡°In the wake of the Great Earthquake in Eastern Japan and global financial crises, Asia has been rising as a new center of the world. The forum confirmed the need for Asian countries to collaborate and feel a sense of solidarity.¡± The second Asia Future Forum in succession from last year is evaluated to have led broader and more plentiful discussions than last year, with 500 participants attending, many of whom were scholars, entrepreneurs and social activists.
