Breakout Session - East Asia 30 What characteristics do excellent CSR performers have in common? What is CSR in Asian context? East Asia 30 is a selection of top 30 CSR performing corporations from Korea, China and Japan. Five experts participated in the breakout session ¡®East Asia 30¡¯ to answer the questions above. East Asia 30 selection started last year. This year, the number of evaluation measures increased from 13 to 20, and the range of evaluation subjects expanded. In particular, the negative screening method was strengthened to filter out unethical or immoral corporations. Lee Young-myon, a professor at Dong-kuk University, said, ¡°The standards of negative screening included illegal actions, industrial accidents and massive recalls. From now on, corporations need to elevate the standards of CSR management.¡± In this year¡¯s evaluation, the Employment Stability measure was heavily weighted. Lee Won-jae, the president of Hankyoreh Economic Research Institute, said, ¡°The West doesn¡¯t consider employment stability important. On the other hand, we think this measure is a very sensitive one.¡± A concern was raised that the increase in the scale of CSR evaluation could reversely weaken it. Ebashi Takahashi, a professor at Hosei University, said, ¡°Fukushima accident revealed the problems with Tokyo Electricity. However, their sustainable management report claimed themselves as an excellent CSR performer. Depending on the data that the corporations provide is the cause of incorrect evaluations.¡±
